An off-roading hero. An icon for the Twin Ports. These are the words that describe the Jeep Wrangler.

The Jeep Wrangler and Wrangler Unlimited are designed to push the boundaries of what is possible in America’s most iconic off-road vehicle. A vehicle with a historic past has forged its way into the present and future with a new lightweight design, greater capability, better efficiency and a livable cabin made for today’s enthusiasts.

Capability – Just Like a Jeep

The new Wrangler has unmatched capability with Command-Trac and Rock-Trac 4×4 systems, next-generation Dana axles, new Selec-Trac full-time two-speed transfer case, Tru-Lock electric front- and rear-axle lockers, Trac-Lok limited-slip differential, and 33-inch off-road tires. It starts underneath with its industry-leading ground clearance (10.9 inches) and approach (44 degrees), breakover (27.8 degrees) and departure angles (37 degrees). The Wrangler also offers unmatched crawl ratios with a 2.72:1 crawl ratio standard on Sport and Sahara models, and a “4LO” ratio of 4:1 with Tru-Lok locking differentials standard on Rubicon models. Plus, the Wrangler can ford up to 30 inches of water. The Wrangler’s suspension is now tuned to optimize on-road handling and ride comfort without sacrificing off-road capability.

Design for Purpose

What will surprise even the most hardened Jeep enthusiasts is how modern the design is, while staying true to the original CJ/Wrangler DNA. Upfront, there is the instantly recognizable keystone-shaped grille that pays homage to Jeep’s original CJ models, flanked by round headlamps and square taillamps providing that distinctive Wrangler character. While it is rugged, the Wrangler offers an overall design that boasts improved aerodynamics, even with a convenient fold-down windshield made for off-road purists. The new Wrangler is also the only true open-air 4×4 SUV with new easy-to-use Sky One-Touch power top, two hardtops, and premium soft top, along with dozens of different door, top, and windshield combinations.

The big news is how it is constructed. The Wrangler is now made with lightweight, high-strength aluminum doors, hinges, hood, fenders, windshield frame, and a magnesium swing gate which all help reduce weight and boost fuel economy.

The Power To Get Through Anything

The all-new Jeep Wrangler will not feature just one engine underneath its aluminum hood — within a year’s time, there will be three ways to power the all-new lightweight and highly-capable icon among SUVs. Two of these engines are all-new for the Wrangler, while the third is a tried, tested and true powerplant reconstituted for today’s needs.

Here is a rundown of these three engines powering the all-new Jeep Wrangler and Jeep Wrangler Unlimited:

2.0-liter turbocharged I-4 engine

The all-new 2.0-liter turbocharged inline four-cylinder engine with eTorque technology is rated a best-in-class 270 horsepower and 295 lb.-ft. of torque, and mated to a new eight-speed automatic transmission. The 2.0-liter turbocharged inline four-cylinder (I-4) engine’s torque output surpasses that of the V-6 engine offered in Wrangler. The all-new eTorque system improves fuel economy, launch performance, and driver comfort during start/stop operations.

The eTorque system’s hybrid functions include auto stop/start, electric power assist, extended fuel shut-off, transmission shift management, intelligent battery charging, and regenerative braking. Both the engine and fuel flow may be turned off during stops, coasting, or when the engine is decelerating.

The 2.0-liter I-4 engine features a twin-scroll, low-inertia turbocharger with an electronically actuated wastegate for exceptional responsiveness and performance, even while traversing over difficult terrain. The turbo is mounted directly to the cylinder head to improve durability. A dedicated cooling circuit lowers the temperature of the intake air, throttle body, and turbocharger.

Direct injection, dual overhead camshafts with 16 valves, and turbocharging make for a more efficient powertrain that is designed to deliver better economy, efficient operation and power where it needs it. This marks the return of the four-cylinder Wrangler, but with a purpose to make the road ahead – or the lack thereof – a better place.

3.6-liter Pentastar V-6 engine

The tried, tested, and true 3.6-liter Pentastar V-6 engine delivers the same 285 horsepower and 260 lb.-ft. of torque as before. However, this engine now features Engine Stop-Start (ESS) as standard equipment. It is engineered to provide a broad torque band with a focus on low-end torque – an essential trait needed for extreme off-roading.

An all-new, six-speed manual transmission is standard on all Wrangler models equipped with the 3.6-liter Pentastar V-6, and a new-to-Wrangler eight-speed automatic transmission is optional.

Compared to the previous Wrangler, expect a smoother transmission and vastly improved fuel economy. This engine has seen its share of conditions and terrain in its time. It’s time for new adventures, now with ESS and the new eight-speed automatic. Not to mention, the venerable six-speed manual transmission.

3.0-liter EcoDiesel V-6 engine

This 3.0-liter EcoDiesel engine is designed to bring serious low-end torque where it is needed. It is rated at 260 horsepower and 442 lb.-ft. of torque, with Engine Stop-Start (ESS) standard. A new eight-speed automatic transmission is standard and is designed to handle the increased torque output.

The EcoDiesel V-6 engine is equipped with a new turbocharger technology, including a low-friction bearing, designed for low-end and transient performance. The upgraded EcoDiesel V-6 engine now also features low-friction pistons to improve fuel economy, reduce greenhouse gas emissions, and provide an enhanced combustion system – new injector nozzle, piston bowl, and glow plug with an integrated combustion pressure sensor to optimize combustion.

This diesel engine is ready to tackle anything in its wake.

Jeep Wrangler 4xe

The new plug-in hybrid driveline that designed to add efficiency along with the Wrangler's legendary off-road capability. The driveline of the 4xe combines a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine with two electric motors and a high-voltage battery pack. In all, there is 375 total horsepower along with instant torque from the electric motors. The result is an all-electric range of 25 miles combined with delivering around 50 MPGe.

While the engine is efficient, the four-wheel drive system keeps it on the trail. Just like a “normal” Wrangler, the 4xe has a two-speed full-time four-wheel-drive system with solid front and rear axles and fully articulating suspension. While it has a 30-inch wading depth, the battery pack located underneath the second row of seats is protected from any damage from water and terrain.

Jeep Wrangler Rubicon 392

The Wrangler Rubicon 392 most-powerful Wrangler ever created. Not to mention, this is the first V8-powered Jeep Wrangler in 40 years.

This Jeep packs major power. The 6.4-liter V8 engine – exactly 392 cubic inches in displacement – packs 470 horsepower and 470 pound-feet of torque. This power is ripe for off-road adventures by offering greater off-road capability with greater approach and departure angles, suspension articulation, maneuverability and water traversing up to 32.5 inches. And, it does so rapidly. The Wrangler Rubicon 392 was clocked going 0-60 MPH in just 4.5 seconds. All of this matched to an eight-speed TorqueFlite automatic transmission.

The Wrangler Rubicon 392 is Trail Rated capability in any condition with Selec-Trac two-speed transfer case and an intuitive full-time four-wheel-drive. The system includes a heavy-duty wide track Dana 44 axles with Tru-Lok electronic locking differentials and electronic front sway-bar disconnect. Plus, it has a 48:1 crawl ratio to tackle steep grades and technical maneuvers.

To accommodate the new powerful V8, the Wrangler Rubicon 392 features upgraded frame rails, a factory 2-inch lift, unique suspension geometry, heavy-duty brakes, and FOX high-performance shocks that enable improved off-road performance, handling and durability. 33-inch tires on 17-inch beadlock-capable wheels are standard on this Rubicon 392.
